Common Fastener Standards

2024-01-19

Fasteners play an essential role in manufacturing, construction, and other industries. They are used to join two or more components together, and their performance is critical for the safety and longevity of the structure or equipment. Understanding the different fastener standards is crucial to ensure that the right component is used in the right application. In this article, we will discuss the most common fastener standards.

ASTM

ASTM standards are published by ASTM (American Society for Testing and Materials) International and set standards for a range of materials, including fasteners. ASTM Fastener standards cover areas such as thread size, coating, hardness, mechanical and chemical properties, and test methods. ASTM standards can help importers assess the safety, functionality, performance, physical properties and composition of their products.

ANSI

The American National Standards Institute (ANSI) is a private, non-profit organization whose standards cover many fields, such as: construction, chemistry, computers, electronics, food, medical, safety, and more. The ANSI fastener standard covers all aspects, including dimensional specifications, performance requirements, and test methods. ANSI standards are widely used in the United States and around the world. Some common ANSI standards for fasteners include B18.2.1 hex bolts, B18.6.3 machine screws, and B18.24 internal and external toothed lock washers.

ISO

ISO standards (standards developed by the International Organization for Standardization) generally refer to international quality system certification. ISO fastener standards cover a wide range of topics, including terminology, dimensional specifications, materials, coatings, surface roughness, mechanical properties and test methods. ISO standards are widely used in Europe and other parts of the world. There are ISO fastener standards that can replace DIN standards, such as ISO2338 that can replace DIN7.

DIN

The Deutsches Institut fr Normung (DIN) is the German national standardization organization and the largest representative non-governmental organization for standardization in Germany. The DIN fastener standard covers all aspects, including thread size, coating, material and mechanical properties. DIN standards are widely used in Europe, especially in Germany, and are known for their high quality. Some common fasteners to DIN standards are: hex nuts DIN 934, hex head wood screws DIN 571, flat washers DIN 125.
